Wanted: People who know a half century-old computer language so states can process unemployment claims

In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy has put out a call for volunteers who know how to code the decades-old computer programming language called COBOL because many of the state’s systems still run on older mainframes.

In Kansas, Gov. Laura Kelly said the state’s Departments of Labor was in the process of modernizing from COBOL but then the virus interfered. “So they’re operating on really old stuff,” she said.
Connecticut has also admitted that it’s struggling to process the large volume of unemployment claims with its “40-year-old system comprised of a COBOL mainframe and four other separate systems.” The state is working to develop a new benefits system with Maine, Rhode Island, Mississippi and Oklahoma. But the system won’t be finished before next year.

“Literally, we have systems that are 40-plus-years-old,” New Jersey Gov. Murphy said over the weekend. “There’ll be lots of postmortems and one of them on our … Read More

People stuck at home due to virus turn to news programming

NEW YORK (AP) — With millions of American homebound due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s little surprise they’re curious about what’s going on in the world.

News programs reached more people than they had in years and, in one case, notched its biggest average audience ever, the Nielsen company said.

Two of the broadcast evening newscasts, which offer a cogent summary of the day’s developments, had a bigger average audience than any program in prime-time last week. They were ABC’s “World News Tonight,” up 38 percent in viewers from its season average, and NBC’s “Nightly News,” up 47 percent.

The “CBS Evening News” audience was 31 percent higher than it is typically.

The cable news networks, which never turn off, were also playing in millions of American homes. MSNBC’s daytime audience, starting at 6 a.m., was higher than any other week since the network began in 1996.

Will gadget shopping ever be the same again after the pandemic? – In the age of social distancing, people might not want to handle fingerprint-smudged smartphones on display

Apple unveiled the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air two weeks ago, but most fans still can’t try them out in stores. Since March 13, the Californian giant has shuttered all of its retail outlets except in Greater China, along with Samsung and Microsoft, which also closed their US stores.

Trying to find a good laptop to buy now that everyone in the family is staying home? Or wondering how Apple’s updated keyboard feels? All of sudden, it’s no longer an option to go on a shopping trip to see and touch things for yourself. And even in places where shops remain open, it’s easy to see why some people might be reluctant to handle display items.
