Search Engine Optimization (SEO) | USAGov

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and USAGov applies SEO practices to improve (optimize) online content to rank/perform well on different search engines:

1. Put primary keywords in the:

  • URL (such as usa.gov/topics/social-security.html)
  • First words of the page <title>
  • Meta description (summary), which is readable, plain language, and inspires clickthroughs from Bing, Google, Yahoo, etc.
  • Page title, tagged as an <H1> 
  • Body (at least two or more times)
  • Link titles or nouns that are descriptive of what you are offering the user, but not the verbs (for example, download passport forms; not download passport forms)

2. When appropriate, use secondary keywords in the fields listed above, plus in the asset heading, which is tagged as <H2> and secondary headings, which are tagged as <H3> and <H4>. Examples:

  • Scam, scheme and swindle are secondary keywords for fraud.
  • Arrendar and rentar are secondary keywords for alquilar

3. Keep key page elements short:

  • Titles: fewer than 75 characters with spaces.
  • URLs: fewer than 90 characters with hyphens.
  • Meta description/summary: fewer than 160 characters with spaces.

4. Link to authoritative sites, and avoid broken links.

What is the difference between webpage, website, web server, and search engine? – Learn web development

In this article, we describe various web-related concepts: web pages, websites, web servers, and search engines. These terms are often confused by newcomers to the web or are incorrectly used. Let’s learn what they each mean!

Prerequisites: You should know how the Internet works.
Objective: Be able to describe the differences between a web page, a website, a web server, and a search engine.

Summary

As with any area of knowledge, the web comes with a lot of jargon. Don’t worry, we won’t overwhelm you with all of it (we have a glossary if you’re curious). However, there are a few basic terms you need to understand at the outset, since you’ll hear these expressions all the time as you read on. It’s easy to confuse these terms sometimes since they refer to related but different functionalities. In fact, you’ll sometimes see these terms misused in news reports and elsewhere, so getting them mixed up is understandable!

We’ll cover these terms and technologies in more detail as we explore further, but these quick definitions will be a great start for you:

web page
A document which can be displayed in a web browser such as Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Edge, or Apple’s Safari. These are also often called just “pages.”
website
A collection of web pages which are grouped together and usually connected together in various ways. Often called a “web site” or simply a “site.”
web server
A computer that hosts a website on the Internet.
search engine
A web service that helps you find other web pages, such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo. Search engines are normally accessed through a web browser (e.g. you can perform search engine searches directly in the address bar of Firefox, Chrome, etc.) or through a web page (e.g. bing.com or duckduckgo.com).

Let’s look at a simple analogy — a public library. This is what you would generally do when visiting a library:

  1. Find a search index and look for the title of the book you want.
  2. Make a note of the catalog number of the book.
  3. Go to the particular section containing the book, find the right catalog number, and get the book.

Let’s compare the library with a web server:

  • The library is like a web server. It has several sections, which is similar to a web server hosting multiple websites.
  • The different sections (science, math, history, etc.) in the library are like websites. Each section is like a unique website (two sections do not contain same books).
  • The books in each section are like webpages. One website may have several webpages, e.g., the Science section (the website) will have books on heat, sound, thermodynamics, statics, etc. (the webpages). Webpages can each be found at a unique location (URL).
  • The search index is like the search engine. Each book has its own unique location in the library (two books cannot be kept at the same place) which is specified by the catalog number.

What Is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the practice of increasing the number and quality of visitors to a website by improving rankings in the algorithmic search engine results.

How Does SEO Work?

Google (and Bing, which also power Yahoo search results) score their search results largely based upon relevancy and authority of pages it has crawled and included in its web index, to a users query to provide the best answer.

Google uses over 200 signals in scoring their search results and SEO encompasses technical and creative activities to influence and improve some of those known signals. It’s often useful to not focus too much on individual ranking signals and look at the wider goal of Google, to provide the best answers for its users.

SEO, therefore, involves making sure a website is accessible, technically sound, uses words that people type into the search engines, and provides an excellent user experience, with useful and high quality, expert content that helps answers the user’s query.

Google has a very large team of search quality raters that evaluate the quality of search results, that gets fed into a machine learning algorithm. Google’s search quality rater guidelines provide plenty of detail and examples of what Google class as high or low quality content and websites, and their emphasis on wanting to reward sites that clearly show their expertise, authority and trust (EAT).

Google uses a hyperlink based algorithm (known as ‘PageRank’) to calculate the popularity and authority of a page, and while Google is far more sophisticated today, this is still a fundamental signal in ranking. SEO can therefore also include activity to help improve the number and quality of ‘inbound links’ to a website, from other websites. This activity has historically been known as ‘link building’, but is really just marketing a brand with an emphasis online, through content or digital PR for example.

Relevant and reputable websites linking to a website is a strong signal to Google that it might be of interest to its users, and can be trusted to appear in the search results for relevant queries.

SEO involves technical and creative activities that are often grouped into ‘Onsite SEO’ and ‘Offsite SEO’. This terminology is quite dated, but it is useful to understand, as it splits practices that can be performed on a website, and away from a website.
