University: Research Team Developed ‘Breakthrough Technology’ That Could Block Coronavirus From Infecting Human Cells

A team of researchers at the University of Louisville say they have developed a technology that could prevent the COVID-19 virus from infecting human cells by blocking its ability to replicate itself inside the body.

The researchers’ findings were reported Wednesday by the University of Louisville’s UofL News’ Baylee Pulliam, who covers research and innovation at the university. The “breakthrough technology,” writes Pulliam, “is believed to block the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 from infecting human cells.”

“The technology is based on a piece of synthetic DNA – an ‘aptamer’ –  which targets and binds with a human protein called nucleolin,” Pulliam explains. “Early tests show that this aptamer may stop viruses, including novel coronavirus, from ‘hijacking’ nucleolin to replicate inside the body.”

Because of the promising results of their early testing, the university is seeking to “fast-track development, including application to the Food and Drug Administration for approval to start treating

Free Technology for Teachers

Since I was in elementary school I have enjoyed looking at maps and day dreaming about the places those maps depict. I like maps so much I have a couple of USGS topographical maps on the wall in my office. So whenever the USGS emails me with something new, I immediately investigate it. The latest email that I got from the USGS featured collections of “learning from home” resources.

Learning From Home With USGS offers eight weeks of lesson ideas and activities that students can complete online and or offline in their homes. For example, this week’s resources include step-by-step directions and templates for building six different sand dune models. This week’s resources also include dozens of links to resources for learning about national parks that contain sand dunes.

You can use the Learning From Home With USGS units in any order that you like. All of the resources from

West must do more to stop China buying up technology, former U.K. spy chief says

The West needs to do more to stop China buying up strategic technology including companies such as British semiconductor chip designer Imagination Technologies, the former head of Britain’s MI6 foreign intelligence service said on Thursday.

The British government should seek every mechanism to prevent the removal of the technology base of Imagination Technologies to China, including seeking a Western buyer for the company, British lawmakers have said.

John Sawers, the chief of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, from 2009 to 2014, said China was seeking to expand its global clout, though it was not the same existential threat that the Soviet Union once was.

“I don’t think it’s an existential threat in the way the Soviet Union was in the Cold War but nevertheless there is going to be deep rivalry over control of technology,” Sawers told Sky. “We have more to do in the West to make sure

6 Technology Articles You Must Read Today

Enjoy these six tech articles as we come down the homestretch into the weekend.

Greg Otto at fedscoop wrote this interesting piece about IBM’s Watson-as-a-Service.

Otto writes:

IBM announced last week it has moved its cognitive computing system into the cloud to form the Watson Discovery Advisor, allowing researchers, academics and anyone else trying to leverage big data the ability to test programs and hypotheses at speeds never before seen.

Since Watson is built to understand the nuance of natural language, this new service allows researchers to process millions of data points normally impossible for humans to handle. This can reduce project timelines from years to weeks or days.

The ability to understand natural language queries is a big deal. You can ask, for example: “I’m going to be in Boston. I like basketball. What do you suggest, Watson?” You might get several answers: Celtics tickets, Boston College tickets, Harvard
